Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving:

Core competencies: Creative thinking is important in problem solving so that you can find new ways to solve a thing for new problems.

Example: The business analyst at BellMTS was recently asked to
create a new way to analyze the progress of Bell's new Data Center.


Behavioral Characteristics:

Core competencies: Personal accountability is needed in all jobs, especially as a business analyst. You need to take accountability if you missed something or screw up.

Example: At BellMTS you have monthly meetings to go over everything you are doing right and wrong. This creates a lot of personal accountability because if you don't take responsibility, you may lose your job.


Business Knowledge:

Core competencies: Organizational knowledge is important when navigating projects. You need to know what your superiors and shareholders want.

Example: Understanding the goals of your organization is important when analyzing it so you can know what needs to be changed.


Communication Skills

Core competencies: Verbal communication is required in all workplaces no matter how advanced we get in technology.

Example: All meetings at BellMTS are in person and have lots of verbal communication.


Interaction Skills

Core competencies:  Leadership and influencing others allows for workplace advancement and increased confidence placed in you by superiors.

Example: BellMTS looks for leaders to promote first. Placing people in teams usually shows who the leaders are. My finance manager at BellMTS was promoted ahead of an 8 year senior worker because of his leadership skills. They are very important in your interaction skills.

Tools and Technology


Core competencies: Business analysis tools and technology are important for day to day tasks and will improve our skills and efficiency as they are mastered

Example: Some analysis tools are focused on individual business activities and some are for the entire business.
